"I forgot how close the audience are going to be. They’re going to be hanging over us and looking up at us and it feels as if they’re under your feet...And it’s dark in there! But it’s such an amazing space though, I think it’s my favourite space I have ever had the pleasure of working in..."
With Tech Week underway, Will catches us up on rehearsals after dark (quite literally!)
"We’ve been recording the dialogue of a scene, and then playing it. And we’ve been directed to follow our feet: either moving towards something, moving away, or being in stillness...And I felt that I wanted to be absolutely nowhere near my mother in the first scene, which was interesting. Because, you know, I’ve just lost my dad and we should be sharing the mourning together..."
Taking us into the rehearsal room, Will shares exercises from the first few weeks, and how these have helped to develop his relationships to other characters.
"This is my first Shakespeare professionally. As in working 'professionally'...that's funny. I don’t know when you stop being a not professional actor and you started being a professional actor..."
Performing in his first 'professional' Shakespeare role in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Will Merrick shares his experience with Shakespeare onstage and off.
