The extent to which a playtext offers definitive stage directions for the performance of violence is complicated further by the alternative possibilities presented by both the intended theatrical space (or spaces) and by various quarto and folio editions.

Looking at Act 5 Scene 3 in King Lear, this document provides an overview of proceedings and responses from a collaborative workshop between King's College, London and Queen Mary University of London postgraduates on staging violence, which used the stage at Shakespeare's Globe to explore assumptions and possibilities surrounding this topic.
