Maria played by Paul Chahidi
Twelfth Night (2012)
Written by: William Shakespeare
Paul Chahidi revives his 2002 role playing the witty waiting woman, Maria, in this season's all male Twelfth Night.
Paul was also adopted as Maria back in 2002 - check out his past blog entries.
"Playing a woman you forget that you look a bit wierd and interesting!" Now in performance, Paul reflects on the positive responses he has recieved from the Globe audience. He also looks ahead to the West End; moving from an outdoor to an indoor theatre.
Paul talks about voice, text and movement work for playing Maria. He says, "My whole approach to the part is not to try and impersonate a woman". Paul thinks the audience will believe him more as a woman because he played the character "truthfully" and "with strong and clear intentions".
"The whole Malvolio story is set into motion by Maria...and she does it so brilliantly!" Paul talks about Maria's key relationships, including her feelings towards Malvolio. Paul reveals how it is Maria's status within the household which really shapes her character.
