Sam Wanamaker
Our founder, Sam Wanamaker, passionately believed that the Globe should be rooted in its community and in the power of the arts as a force for change to transform communities. This inspires all of our work; that Shakespeare and the Globe should extend beyond our building, beyond schools and into the streets and homes of Southwark. Southwark has changed enormously since the 1970s when Sam first started working here. The borough is constantly evolving and is home to hundreds of diverse communities. Our challenge today is to engage with all sectors of the community.
Community is a sense of belonging and the potential to be inspired together. The relationship between the Southwark community, Shakespeare’s stories and the Globe is that we share this space, this air, these streets, these stories and the possibilities contained within the wooden ‘O’ as a common bond that has the capacity to draw us together in the midst of our diversity.
Globe Education’s Community Projects are for the people who work, live and learn in the London borough of Southwark, the home of the Globe. We are committed to making Southwark a place where every member of the community can have and meet high expectations from Globe Education.
Each year Globe Education seeks to create new partnerships with Southwark schools and strengthen existing ones. We are also committed to finding new partners to support the extension of our work with the wider community of Southwark:
