2013 Season - Shakespeare's Globe Macbeth DVD

£19.99

Shakespeare's Globe 2013 production of Macbeth filmed on the Globe stage.

From it's mesmerising first moments to the final fulfilment of the witches' prophecy, Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's darkest and most powerful tragedies - a gripping account of one man's determination to secure his ambition and pronounced destiny, the crown of Scotland, by whatever means necessary.  Filmed in High Definition and true surround sound, this production marked actor Eve Best's sensational debut as a director and was described as 'cracking - at times, terrifying' (Daily Telegraph).  Joseph Millson and Samantha Spiro lead the cast, offering 'superb fresh-minted performances' as the power-obsessed Macbeth and his increasingly guilt-ridden wife.

This is an unparallelled and unique experience: Shakespeare's tragedy "Macbeth" performed, by and large, as comedy - and, surprisingly, it works so well that you have a sneaking suspicion that this is how Shakespeare meant it to be, back in 1606. In spite of its overall comic approach to what we have taken to be pure tragedy for four centuries, this production even achieves to make us feel extremely sorry for Macbeth and his lady (which does not always succeed in productions of the Scottish Play), and then lift our spirits again with a spectacular jig at the end (always missing in film productions). With its inspired direction and its splendid performances from all involved, this is a must-see and must-have for anyone who wishes to experience or study the play. Basta.

Our daughter wanted tickets to a production at the Globe for her 18th birthday. Unfortunately the only tickets we could get for suitable dates were for Macbeth - the play she hates due to the way it was taught in school. We decided to go ahead anyway and it was a great success. The play was fantastic, well acted, well directed and choreographed. It was more humorous than other productions of Macbeth I have seen which only seemed to accentuate the darkness of the play. Definitely the best Macbeth I have seen and our daughter loved it. Thank you to all involved.
