Shakespeare Globe Centre-USA Inc. (SGC USA) works to support and develop the Globe in London as well as supporting the numerous activities of the Globe which take place in America.
Founded by American actor Sam Wanamaker in 1974, SGC USA was a cornerstone in his quest to reconstruct the Globe Theatre, now completed on Bankside in London, and the transatlantic links remain to this day. From the fundraising of our American board to the kind donation of John Wolfson of many early modern play texts, including a copy of Shakespeare’s quarto and first folio editions, SGC USA highlights the popularity of the work of Shakespeare all across the world. In addition, the Globe has unprecedented resource material from its own respected research department which is led by fellow American Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper, who also chairs the architectural research group that advised on the design of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the Globe’s new indoor Jacobean theatre.
SGC USA’s love of Shakespeare is evident in the success for the Globe in bringing over productions from our London base to America; from small scale tours regularly crossing America to the Broadway transfer of our award winning productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night. This is in addition to the huge success we have had with the screening of productions filmed in London in cinemas all over America.
SGC USA also helps support the charitable work through Globe Education. Globe Education has worked across the syllabus, creating short courses for high school students and undergraduates at several different US universities. These include an extended program for Rutgers students incoporating the opportunity to study overseas at the Globe Theatre in London. Alongside the work with students, the Globe is working in collaboration with UC Davis to establish an academy for teachers and educators which combines lessons in California with courses taught in London.
The Shakespeare Globe Trust is a United Kingdom based educational charity dedicated to the experience and international understanding of Shakespeare in performance. All of its work is achieved without any annual government subsidy.
