Sam Wanamaker Playhouse first season announced
The first and foremost task of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is to help us to explore the plays of that period written specifically for indoor theatres, and we have lined up a mouth-watering collection for its first season – the incomparable The Duchess of Malfi with its charnel house humour and its glittering poetry; The Knight of the Burning Pestle, which can only really make sense in a theatre like this one; and the brilliantly satirical The Malcontent, to be performed by our Young Players.
But beyond these plays we have been delighted by the interest shown in our new theatre by other forms of performance. It is simply glorious that the Royal Opera House are joining us in this adventure with such a bold spirit, by producing L’Ormindo by Carvalli, hopefully the beginning of a long journey of discovery into early opera. And beside that, great performers like Eileen Atkins bring Ellen Terry back to life, and shows curated by masters like Trevor Pinnock and John Williams, with the wild punk humour of the Rubberbandits to liven up the mix.
There truly is something for everyone here, or everything for someone.

Globe Theatre 2013 'Season of Plenty'
Join us for a bold and vibrant 2013 theatre season, full of magic, enchantment and the fantastical.
Roger Allam returns to the Globe to play Prospero in The Tempest, joined by Colin Morgan as Ariel in his Globe debut and Jessie Buckley as Miranda. A Midsummer Night’s Dream welcomes Olivier Award winning Michelle Terry back as Titania. And continuing with the supernatural, Eve Best will direct Macbeth, with Joseph Millson as the title role.
Three new plays will receive world premieres – The Lightning Child by Ché Walker, directed by Matthew Dunster and with music by Arthur Darvill, Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale will be directed by John Dove, and Gabriel by Samuel Adamson, featuring English trumpet soloist, Alison Balsom.
On Tour across the UK and Europe will include the three plays of Henry VI; Harry the Sixth, The Houses of York & Lancaster, The True Tragedy of the Duke of York as well as King Lear and The Taming of the Shrew. Whilst three ground-breaking, international companies which came to London for Globe to Globe return for a limited number of performances as part of wider international tours. A thrilling Venus & Adonis from South Africa, an enchanting Georgian As You Like It, a wild Indian Tempest, and a searing Belarusian King Lear.
