Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
23 & 24 November
Award-winning poet and playwright Simon Armitage takes to the Playhouse stage to perform his acclaimed translation of the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Preserved on a single surviving manuscript dating from around 1400, and composed by an anonymous master, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is at once a ghost story, a thriller, a romance, and adventure story and a morality tale.
'Armitage's animated translation is to be welcomed for helping to liberate Gawain from academia, as Seamus Heaney did in 1999 for Beowulf.'
‘Like the Gawain poet, Armitage is some storyteller.'
