What did ‘history’ mean to Shakespeare’s first audiences? How has Shakespeare’s idea of history influenced the stories we tell about our own nations, experiences and identities? Join leading scholars and practitioners from the Globe and elsewhere to explore history-making on stage in Shakespeare’s time and our own.

 

Learning objectives

–       To explore Shakespeare’s conception of history, nationhood and identity in his plays, as well as other dramatic and non-dramatic early modern works.

–       To develop a sophisticated understanding of early modern historiography, on stage, in print and in popular culture.

–       To consider the uses and abuses of historical drama in the early modern past, and the present day.

Please note: Unless otherwise stated all sessions will take place in the Globe Education Sackler Studios.
