Written by: William Shakespeare
Directed by: Tang Shu-wing
Part of Globe to Globe 2015 and performed in Cantonese.
A modern couple dream that they enter the universe of Macbeth in the buried past of ancient China, assuming the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and encountering different characters in the play. On leaving the dream, where they have experienced the dark side of humanity, the couple contemplate their place in this turbulent contemporary realm.
Inspired by the tradition of Asian physical theatre, this version of Macbeth transmits the spirit of the play through a succession of stylised images. It is comparable to the aesthetics of dance, where the expression of the body and its physical movements and live accompaniment reveal the characters' relationship as well as the director's vision of time and space.
The hybrid culture of Hong Kong informs this production of the Scottish play from the eminent director’s outstanding and groundbreaking troupe. Described as the ‘alchemist of minimalist theatre’, Tang Shu-wing works with simple staging, voice and movement, to release the energies of classic texts.
Co-commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival. Supported by the Arts Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
