Stephano is a butler from the royal court. He and Trinculo are shipwrecked on a different part of the island, where they meet Caliban and give him their wine. Caliban convinces Stephano to overthrow Prospero and become ruler of the island, until they are caught by Prospero and Ariel and ridiculed at the end of the play.
