Shakespeare's Globe

Venus & Adonis [1998]

Written by: John Blow
Directed by: Ian Caddy

Venus and Adonis has an excellent claim to be the first true English opera. But this remarkable work has had a chequered history: it was first performed at the court of Charles II but remained undiscovered until 1902. The vividness and power of the music, the tragic simplicity of the story and the deft suggestions of mood and character stand up well to its only heir, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

Using recreated seventeenth-century staging and gesture, Philip Pickett brings his acclaimed mastery of this neglected treasure of the English Baroque to the Globe stage.
