ABOUT YOUR VISIT

Please read the details below to familiarise yourself with our venue and policies before visiting us. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank

Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank is Shakespeare’s Globe flagship student engagement project, in which we give away 27,000 free tickets to non-selective state secondary schools in London and Birmingham. Most performances in this project are attended by schools only, and as such, we have some extra considerations for groups in attendance.

  • School groups will be met by a Schools Ambassador (identifiable in orange hi-vis) before entering the site. Schools may be asked to wait on Bankside to manage the flow of people. They will also be given a briefing on what to expect, and a reminder of our Top Tips before heading in.
  • We do not issue physical tickets for schools-only performances. All staff will have an expected list of schools for each performance.
  • School performances operate a 1:15 staff to student ratio. If struggling to meet this requirement, schools must let us know in advance.
  • Teachers must wear a hi-vis supplied by the Globe for the duration of the performance; this is so we can identify different groups when onsite.
  • Due to the large number of groups onsite, our catering outlets, cloakroom and shop are closed prior, during and after school performances.

Top Tips for visiting Shakespeare's Globe

The Globe Theatre is a unique performance space, with no roof and room for over 500 people standing, as well as a further 800 seated. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of this one-of-a-kind venue for all, please be sure to familiarise yourself and share with your students our Top Tips for a great trip.

Before the performance

  • Discuss considerations for a respectful audience. This about what the difference is between an indoor and an outdoor theatre – our actors have no microphones; and noise can be very distracting!
  • Ensure phones are in bags or pockets. There is no photography or filming allowed at our performances.
  • Visit the toilet before the show.
  • Dress for the weather: performances continue rain or shine! Umbrellas are not permitted in the theatre.

During the performance

  • Young people must be accompanied when moving around the site, including leaving the theatre to go to the bathroom, or refill water bottles (we have water points directly outside the theatre).
  • Distribute your staff amongst students, wherever you are in the theatre.
  • We actively encourage young people to engage with and respond to the production at key moments.
  • If standing, keep your students and staff in one clearly designated area.
  • If standing, be mindful of clearly marked areas – don’t stand or place your bags here. Sometimes actors will move through the audience, and we need to make sure they are not touched or blocked getting to / leaving the stage.
  • If standing, sitting is prohibited. If you are struggling to stand, please let one of our Stewards know.
  • If seated, keep belongings together and be mindful of items falling into the Yard – especially if you are in the front row.

After the performance

  • Groups cannot congregate onsite due to activity taking place in the theatre and surrounding area after the show. Please roll call on Bankside.
