Immerse yourself in an atmospheric Indian soundscape as sarod star Soumik Datta performs a double bill of classical and contemporary music in the intimate setting of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Datta will initially be joined by special guest Talvin Singh OBE for an improvised dialogue of sarod and tabla. Singh, a Mercury Award-winner, is widely considered to be the father of modern Asian Underground music.
Later in the evening, Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray’s cult and off-beat film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, will be projected on a large screen with a reimagined live cinematic score (King of Ghosts) that features the haunting sounds of Soumik's sarod, Cormac Byrne’s Irish folk rhythms and a string sextet from the City of London Sinfonia. The film, which follows the magical journey of Goopy and Bagha who are granted three wishes by the benevolent yet terrifying King of Ghosts, will take you on a breathtaking and magical journey across rural India - a vintage superhero film at its best. Commissioned and toured by the Edinburgh Mela in 2014, King of Ghosts was originally composed by Datta, percussionist Cormac Byrne and Johannes Berauer.
City of London Sinfonia is Orchestra-in-Residence at the critically acclaimed Opera Holland Park, and have previously performed in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse with their event The Viennese Salon with Dame Felicity Lott.
Please note: the primary screen showing the film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne may not be fully visible from all seats, however in these cases there will be a secondary screen available to view. If you have any further questions, please call our Box Office on 020 7401 9919.
