Presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, Shakespeare’s Globe and Paula Marie Black
Depressed and plagued by insomnia, King Philippe V of Spain lies awake in his chamber. The Queen, desperate to find a cure, hears of Farinelli – a castrato with a voice so divine it has the power to captivate all who hear it. Even Philippe is astonished when Farinelli sings, and begs him to stay. But will Farinelli, one of the greatest celebrities of his time, choose a life of solitude over fame and fortune in the opera houses of Europe? And will his extraordinary talent prove to be a curse rather than a blessing?
Sonia Friedman Productions, Shakespeare’s Globe and Paula Marie Black join forces once again (Richard III and Twelfth Night, 2012) to bring this inspiring true story to Broadway’s Belasco Theatre. The theatre will be magically transformed – music will be played live by musicians on traditional Baroque instruments, audience members can enjoy intimate onstage seating, and the entire production will be lit almost exclusively by the glow of candlelight.
Oscar® and three-time Tony® winner Mark Rylance reprises his role as Philippe V, alongside original cast members Sam Crane (Farinelli), Huss Garbiya (Doctor José Cervi), Colin Hurley (Metastasio) and Edward Peel (De La Cuadra), with Grammy Award-winning countertenor Iestyn Davies as the singing voice of Farinelli.
Farinelli and the King originally premiered to rave reviews and played a sold out run in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in February 2015. The production later transferred to the West End, where it received six Olivier Award nominations.
