‘Mark how one string, sweet husband to another,
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering’
Virtuoso classical guitarist John Williams returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this summer for a pair of concerts alongside two world-renowned musicians.
John has delighted audiences with previous performances in the unique acoustic conditions of the candlelit Playhouse, and this summer we invite Berta Rojas and Paco Peña to share the stage with him for an international celebration of the classical guitar.
‘It was pure magic. The five stars apply equally to the music, the musicians and the venue.’

Saturday 21 July, 7.45pm
On Saturday evening, John Williams is joined by Paraguayan ‘guitarist extraordinaire’, Berta Rojas (Washington Post).
John will play music by Vivaldi and the Irish harpist O’Carolan, as well as a range of Venezuelan pieces, while Berta’s programme will include an homage to her compatriot and pioneer of the classical guitar, Agustín Barrios Mangoré.
Sunday 22 July, 6.45pm
Celebrating 49 years of friendship, Paco Peña and John Williams will perform a selection of their favourite works, complementing each other’s contrasting styles.
Paco Peña is a globally acclaimed and multi-award winning guitarist who has redefined what we understand by flamenco. As part of the evening’s programme, John will perform various Spanish pieces, ranging from the 16th century to compositions by Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909).
